Reflecting on two years of Aigis: Objectively best events of 2015-2016

Lest we lose hope and consider the possibility that Dev Tea doesn't just make this an Odette revival, but a repeat of previous Odette "revivals" and the event train comes to a halt once more, let's take a moment to reflect on the past two years and what events have actually been genuinely entertaining.

Hopefully it doesn't come to that again, but in the meantime, here is a list of the totally-objectively-best events in the past two years.

As a disclaimer, this is NOT a list of the events with the best rewards. Otherwise, Anya, Karma, and the gold rushes would obviously be at the top, and that's a boring list. Instead, this is a list of the events that I felt made the most out of their plots and gimmicks, making them fun and exciting, if not outright challenging. In other words, it doesn't make me think "oh, another event with mind-control/blackmail" or "oh, another event where the girl is "challenging" us to prove ourselves."

This is really just my opinion, but let me have my moment, because I'm exceedingly bored at work again and also excessively sleep-deprived, and typing a lot helps alleviate my boredom and keeps me awake.

In other words, lots of text incoming. I don't expect everyone to read all of this, but feel free to discuss which parts you agree/disagree with.

    Starting from #10 to #6...

    10. Shiho - Oni Summoning Sorceress

Besides the fact that this cutie is actually pretty damn useful and years later, even in DMM, she still retains her reputation as one of the best single-target healers in the game, her event is notable in that it's not "just another farm event where the event unit challenges Prince before she's convinced to join, sometimes with a series of trials", as was the case with Belinda, Maribel, and Odette.

Because Shiho has a job to do, and as stupid as it is, she's gonna do it, dammit. Protecting the oni is her responsibility, even if said oni are completely out of her control and she'd really prefer that someone help subdue them instead. Since her hands are tied, she decides to "fight" the Prince *wink wink nudge nudge*, while still helpfully suggesting to stay out of the oni's way, a not-so-subtle tip to focus on ranged firepower for this event. And of course, since she's not really trying to stop you, she's absolutely laughable as an enemy, doing almost negligible damage and going down just as quickly. Overall, it's a nice twist compared to previous farm units. If her event had a G map, the oni might've been legitimately threatening, but since that wasn't the case, having good ranged damage was enough to carry you through this event pretty easily.

    ---

    9. Rika - Ancient Automata

Another unit whose claim to fame has yet to be realized on our server, but is undoubtedly useful even years later, thanks to being a free unit whose SAW grants her true damage.

Like Shiho before her, Rika's not actually fighting the Prince despite being a farm unit. Unlike Shiho, however, she skips the middleman entirely and actually joins Prince from the start, since they're undoubtedly on the same side in this incident. Which is to say, slapping some sense into Gustav for tampering with technology not meant for his use. In fact, her event would've made the most sense to have her be a 100% guaranteed first-time drop on the first map.

Rika's event was also interesting for having enemies that weren't so much of a threat in direct combat, but just by their sheer defense and numbers, which rendered archers useless for the event. Even Nanaly wasn't very useful here. The G map, on the other hand, was all sorts of bullshit, for having the notable distinction of having an Efreet spawn BEHIND the goal, then proceed to take the wonkiest pathfinding around the map just to wreak havoc on your units.

    ---

    8. Noel/Kagura - Two Saints

Oh hey, Danchou's back from the dead! Except not really, since this event chronologically takes place before the End of the Dark Knights. But unlike the times Danchou used Momiji and Waltz to attack the Prince, here he just pisses off two unrelated shrine maidens and uses their sacred treasures to... promptly screw himself over. You gotta admit, an army of mass-produced paperweight knights or a gigantic Danchou moving at the speed of a snail was pretty fucking hilarious.

Kagura is pretty boring, being an inferior Shiho and all, but Noel is useful to anyone who doesn't already have Mia and/or Marius, and Noel herself is also pretty cute and honestly has one of the best h-scenes in the game. Not bad for a dwarf loli.

    ---

    7. Claudia - Sword of the Dragon Slayer

The event that introduced bosses with two phases, and made some legitimately threats out of the dragons that were previously glorified archer fodder. It gave us no less than four flavors of dragons, and the black dragon being such a credible threat that the best strategy against it was to stall it with a HEALER.

Special mention to a princess who follows her own niche of true damage (and extra damage against dragons, I guess), and isn't made obsolete by the other shrine princesses. Also, she doesn't follow those silly sex-after-marriage laws.

    ---

    6. Horace - Swordswoman of the Burning Sands

The event that kicked off the desert arc. Horace would give us a glimpse of the things we would come to learn and hate, namely the desert HP penalty and mummy avengers. To top that off, her desert soldiers and she herself were no joke either. And if that wasn't enough punishment, how's about three lichs coming from different directions? You know, in case Immortal Beast wasn't enough of a challenge. And remember, that was just a fucking X-tier map.

The G map didn't slack off either, by throwing another three lichs at you, in the middle of a crowd of mummies and more desert soldiers for good measure.

In the end, she certainly tested the patience of even veteran players, but our reward was a strong magic fencer (who sadly made Charlotte near-obsolete), some really tough desert maps to look forward to (hello, Danger in the Oasis), and the first time Prince actually speaks. Yeah, who saw that coming?

    Top 5:

    5. Memento - Daughter of the King of the Dead

The event that (supposedly) brought an end to the asshole who controlled Charlotte and ruined Imelia/Anelia's kingdom. Actually an extremely interesting event, since Memento seems like your standard daddy's little villain, only to turn around and reveal that she was playing her father the entire time. Rereading the dialogue, you can see that she was purposely holding back in her fights against the Prince, in order to force the King to step in and be distracted long enough for her to make her move. Definitely a nice twist.

And Memento herself, while hardly the best necromancer, is also pretty crazy in a good way. It's nice to have a yandere who doesn't care about being #1 waifu, but will aggressively use whatever methods to force the Prince to bed her, whether it's paralysis or lust magic.

Now if only the translation for Memento's introduction wasn't so goddamn awful.

    ---

    4. Marie/Beatrice - The Treacherous Pirate

The event that introduced everyone's favorite machine-gun fish. It's also the first event where the monsters actually had a clever strategy for starting the conflict, that didn't ultimately boil down to "lol mind control or body possession" or "lol I have your kingdom/citizens/dragon egg hostage".

Not only did they manage to stop the sailors and pirates from making peace and joining forces, which would actually make them a threat to the sea monsters, they executed a solid false flag operation by attacking both sides and pinning the blame on each other. You gotta admit, that was a pretty ballsy move, and one that would've succeeded if the Prince hadn't saved Marie in the nick of time. Even then, they still managed to nearly wipe both sides out completely, and even had Beatrice up against a wall until Prince stepped in.

Aside from that, we also got a pretty colorful variety of characters here. Verotte and Giovanni make minor appearances, scythe-wielding demons show up alongside the merpeople to wreck Marie and Beatrice's day, and the legendary pirate Minerva herself lends you a hand in one of the hardest and most RNG-dependent G maps yet.

Also, even if Beatrice is terrible compared to even Monica, Marie is a cutie and fulfills a decent niche.

    ---

    3. Lolonee - The Road to Becoming the King of Bandits

Conrad shows us why he's the King. 'Nuff said.

In all seriousness, an event that revisits all the bandits you've previously met, and gives them (and you) an excuse to have a(nother) fight? Sure, why the hell not? Even Eunice and Mortimer deserve a little attention every now and then, right? Lolonee herself may not be worth writing home about, but seeing her butt in on every re/match is amusing in itself. And the G map culminating in a free-for-all against all the bandits is definitely one of the best ideas of a G map yet.

Again, the only downside to this event is that Lolonee herself is hardly a good reward for it all. But you know what they say about the journey, not the destination.

    ---

    2. Elva - The End of the Dark Knights

Ignoring the fact that they threw us the ending to an event that we never had, centered on a character we've seen but were never properly introduced to, this event really built up Danchou himself as a legitimate threat, and not just a guy who ineffectually uses other women for his own means, only to inevitably add them to Prince's harem.

It's not often you see the second map of an event actually come close to kicking your ass. The attack reduction gimmick never stops being dangerous, to the point that you can't really afk the maps and need to constantly be on your toes until Danchou goes down.

This, of course, comes to a head when Danchou is beaten for good... and the event isn't over, as the Prince once again opens his mouth, and we get a real fight with the Greater Demon, taking place in our first glimpse of Makai/Hell. And Danchou decides to redeem himself by offering to use his dark aura to suppress the bastard (and his mage demon friend).

After showing the Greater Demon who's boss, we're forced to say farewell to Danchou... for about a week, maybe. Praise Dev Tea for actually giving us the rainbow crystal system immediately after the event, allowing us to recruit Danchou for good. Now with the low, low price of 1000 RCs, you too can be drinking buddies with someone who was once your sworn enemy!

The only problem with this event is that, in an unusual twist, Elva herself is kind of thrown to the background, since she only serves to show a more human side to Danchou, and she herself isn't exactly notable as either an enemy or as a recruit. Also, the G map with Cornelia was pretty random, you have to admit.

    And the #1 event is...

    1. Solano - The Summon Beast in the Earth

This is it. The event that was by far the hardest pre-awakening, and is still hard even by today's standards. But why is this #1? Let's break it down.

First, Solano herself. She's actually kind of a cheeky brat, complaining about being rescued by the Prince despite clearly being in over her head. But as you take her through the cave, she does eventually get put in her place, and she does uphold her deal to lend her powers to you once she's made her contract with Efreet.

And the trials themselves? You were either a whale or a god (either by luck or by skill) to have 3*'d all of them.

First, the Sacred Spring maps that prevented healing. They weren't too bad, but the map layout was new for players at the time, so people had to be careful all the same.

Next, the Gravestone maps that prevented Unit Point gain, so you definitely needed soldiers and valks to carry you. Also, there's a lich here, because fuck you.

Then everyone's favorite, the Mighty Ogres maps. All enemies were sped up and you only had a mere three slots to put ranged units in. Three slots to deal with ONI. Could you imagine how terrible Shiho's event would be if you only had three ranged slots to work with? And then there's the X variant, easily the hardest map in the event, and possibly for several events to come, in no small part thanks to a fast black oni which appears at the START of the map and will reach the goal in less than a minute. If you didn't have someone like Nanaly or Karma, good fucking luck.

Next was the Crossroads maps, which on top of introducing yet another new map layout variant with limited range spots (5), contained enemies with unusually high-defense. Including a lich with FIVE THOUSAND defense on the X variant. Hope you've got some good witches, mages, and princesses.

Lastly is the titular Flame Beast and its maps. The extreme heat easily drained your units' health like poison, and the Efreets (yes, plural) had AoE attacks to strain your healers further.

So suppose you managed to go through all the maps. Upon reaching Flame Beast, Solano manages to summon an Efreet to form a contract with. Great. Except, in Flame Beast X, she accidentally summons SEVERAL MORE Efreets and attracts other monsters in the process, including a few oni for good measure. At least she didn't accidentally summon a goddamn lich too. Still, she politely informs everyone that they should get the fuck out. So what does the Prince do? Beat the crap out of all the Efreets, of course. Even Solano herself is in sheer awe at this feat.

And that's why this event is so great. No matter how you cleared it, it really makes you feel like you earned Solano's power at the end. And of course, Solano herself is a great unit, so you don't feel cheated either. Unless you're some kinda loser that prefers Farne or something. :x

And now for some Honorable Mentions (including 2017 events):

    Eden - Vampire's Counterattack

Yeah, we all love our new adorable vampire loli (assuming you have an ounce of good taste, anyway), or the opportunity to see a heartbroken badass like Vincent get some peace of mind, but there's something to be said when the map with golems is more of a hurdle than the actual vampire lord boss, or the fight against the other vampire hunters. To say the difficulty was pretty lopsided this event is an understatement. But hey, who can pass up sex with a vampire loli as a reward?

    ---

    Year End Gold Rush

We've been waiting ages for this type of event, but it didn't feel right to include it in the top 10, just by the nature of the event. While we did get some disjointed plotlines thanks to our shitty scheduling, we can at least say we finally got our Santa loli, gold angel, and Dan (who by extension let us finally AW Rika without having to waste a Gina). We also got to experience another rematch with Danchou (this time with no HP drain handicap), our first glimpse at Eden and a golem, a free-for-all against the princesses, and Gustav being a dumbass again. But sorry, Hien, no luck for you this time. Maybe you'll get your chance in 2017.

    ---

Anya revival - Return of the Dragon Princess

Unlike the Ryujin Invasion revival, the G map here was legitimately tough even for veterans, without knowing how the mages at the end operate. Even then, the ryujin sure like to zerg rush your HQ. Considering how old this event is, that's a pretty big accomplishment.

Aside from that, who can say no to a second chance at getting a Time Fairy at the minimum, if not your first lewd dragon princess? There's not much else to say though, since Anya herself plays no part in the event and both Aria and Echidna are fairly by-the-book.

    ---

Colin - The Alchemist and the Philosopher's Stone

If kicking the Greater Demon's face in wasn't enough satisfaction in Elva's event, it has to be worth doing again here. The G map is basically the only map worth mentioning here though.

    ---

Pupuru - The Druid Shrine Priestess

While the Manticores are fairly threatening (especially in the G map) and the dark elf avengers are always a pain in the ass, I personally thought Pupuru's maps were largely forgettable. The real treasure in this event is Pupuru's hilariously entertaining attitude throughout the whole thing. She's basically a cranky complainer that can't actually fight on her own, so she first passes herself off as a helpless damsel in distress, then runs with it while bossing Prince/Anna around left and right. And in the end, does she quietly go back to sleep? Fuck no, she wants revenge on the dark elves that woke her up in the first place (though she admits she can't go back to sleep even if she wanted to). Word of warning to all: don't piss off a loli-baba.

    And one more Honorable Mention...

    Shao/Shuka - General of a Ruined Land

This is more of a contender for "worst event", really.

The event that introduced us to the bull demons and their incredibly irritating shadow gimmick. Personally, I thought this was an insanely unfair gimmick that took advantage of how simple the game's targeting system really is. Forcing your units to be useless because they're attacking/blocking unkillable shadows wasn't fun, and figuring out how to best separate the real body from the rest was ultimately trial-and-error. Still, I guess they tried to make things different?

I applaud your efforts (in particular to stay awake ) and I agree with most of it. The humor is appreciated too.

Your opinion on worst, I'm not so sure about. I mean, was it annoying to have your ranged units suck hard trying to kill stuff that couldn't be killed? Of course it was. But Shuka is very useful as a unit if you don't have Uzume, Shao has a niche as the only archer with Assassinate and changing it up so you don't just LOL-RANGE DOWN THEM HARD HITTERS wasn't the worst idea they could come up with.

(Let's be real here. The worst events were the break "events" )

(I should probably switch #2 and #3, on second thought...)

I might be slightly biased against Shuka since I literally drew Uzume immediately after clearing her event, making my efforts pretty pointless. Remember that her event was the first time we got Aisha spotlight, so I whaled and ended up getting Uzume, Victoria, and Nanaly #3 instead. Rage intensifies.

And yeah, it goes without saying that break events are worst events. Spectral March (the first subjugation/domination event) may as well have been a break month too, since they didn't give us much else aside from Waltz at the time.

Wait, was Odette event revived 2 times in Nutaku?

Hardest and most challenging event for me was Ryujin Invasion combined with the 2nd part

Fun event was probably the Gold Rush since I was dicking around in creating crazy theme teams while grinding long hours

I've been playing since Imelia event and that was during the summer with a hiatus in there somewhere. Cuz I was salty over my SC pulls. Yeah.. i did spend more than fifty bucks and then rq. Its pretty easy to do when you get nothing but silvers and useless golds like rogues.

I don't have a favorite event yet. None of them had an girl that made me go oh yeah! except for Echidna. Only issue i have is that she's a healer.

And I already have three max lvl healers. Alissa, Christopher, Iris, on top of Elyse, Liana, robert, PUpururu, fedora.. They're not max lvl yet but yeah.. I have more than enough right now XD

The ones that had impact on me was treacherous pirate (my first ever event) also loved pupuru's last event stage its still on my mind. Anya's event was the worst one for me, felt like a chore ;/ guess its because of being our first collection revival.

Collection events (which is what star/collection revivals are now) are traditionally grindy as fuck to begin with. I only included Claudia mostly because of her G map. Imelia had some crazy G maps too, but having to contend with the new map layouts was one issue that made it harder to adapt.

    "Odette revival" is a meme.

The first time Odette showed up on Nutaku, she was preceded by a month-long break. The second time we got a month-long break, it was called Odette revival or Odette 2.0. So basically, Odette is a curse on Nutaku Aigis.

Well ,actually , if you think about it , "odette" as a unit has been "revived" 2 times ,but "Mystic sorcery" has not.

Odette copies were dropped in the gold rush so you could say that she was technically "revived" , but in truth , this is the first time we got her event revival
