I believe those stages were actually reworked to include less random path choices, though I haven't played them in a long while, so I can't really say.

The stamina preservation mechanism is a bit too convenient in my opinion, but since we don't have anything like a planning or dry-run stage to the battles I guess it's not bad.

That may be a different mechanism, since we get a special info window with how much stamina we're getting back if the game gets interrupted and you relogin to it.
I was talking specifically about the case where you see that you won't complete the mission the way you want to, so you simply back out.

I'm up to 8-1 so far in the main story and the stages still have setups where even if the five squads are assigned ideally I'm still looking at at least two coin flips in order to get three medals. I expect random tiles to be less frequent later on but for now it can still get frustrating having an otherwise ideal run go off the rails when I get the short end of a 75%/25% or even a 87.5%/12.5% path split.

That aside, once the day rolls over in-game I'll be getting the 5* exchange ticket as the seventh and last step of the new account rewards. I'm not sure who I should get though; I already have Hop, X-mas Worm Wood, Cymbidium, Lady's Sorrel and the newest event Knight. I've heard that shrine maiden Dianthus is good but I'm also tempted to just get someone who I like, like New Year's Fritters, Kale or either version of Toad Lily.

Keep shrine maiden Dianthus for a 16' stone. they are very common, espacially with Whale Medals. If you have a ticket to choose ANY 5*,it's better to pick a recent girl (2017, 2018 or 2019 one).
Rice Choco Cereal Lily Friti new year is a good idea. she is not bad at all. Another good girl is Straw Flower. Solid girl and her Sun Altar panel are very helpful at the begining (espacially for Whale Ship).

Yeah pick somebody newer because you'll get 15 and 16 from the whale eventually.
I personally like Statice and Pink Ladies Heavenly Flower, Have RG both of them. But there are many good attackers in '18.
Here's a link to recommendations of '18 sealstones (and others if you want)

Yeah, after looking at all of that I've narrowed it down to Cherry, New Year's Fritters or Pink Ladies.

Wasn't the Day 7 ticket a gacha one instead of exchange? Did that change at some point?
