I think getting a better rank increases the chance of getting an epic, but doesn't guarantee it. I've gotten 4 epics already by getting first place (I had a lot of money stockpiled for the pachinko ones, which in turn let me win the girl xp one) and one non-epic item. I could just have been very lucky with the prizes, but somehow I doubt that.
Also about the not getting points thing, I found a quickfix solution. Clearing your cookies, closing the browser and opening it back up and logging in. Starting a new session this way seems to fix it, at least for me today.
I also noticed a minor issue in the text of the All Shall Fear Your Skills contest, where it says "<br><br>
(Only flights from arena are counted, not ones from the tower.)". It shouldn't have the <br> tags, and it should be fight instead of flight. We ain't gonna fly away from the arena after all.
