they can still do that now at the cost of a mountain of elixirs and maybe their life savings...

Is the SSR sword worth getting? I doubt I will be able to LB to the end at this point given that I can only do expert

If you'll play for a year AND can LMB it, yes.

among SSR weapon priority, that sphinx hammer seems like the better of the two for now
