You have to be the leader, subleader or an officer of the union. The leader appoints those, so if your union is dead, you might be out of luck...

That is correct, you cannot leave your union until after the UE is over. I think it's to avoid drama of ppl getting kicked halfway through the event and losing all the accumulated rewards and/or everyone trying to jump ship to the highest ranking union and free-ride on them.

Just try to do what you can and make sure you join an active union for the next UE. UE eidolons will become obsolete quickly, so you're really just missing out on the SSR weapons, which can be FLB-ed. Fire tower was a while ago, so if you don't ever plan to use your water team, it's not a big deal.

Edit: don't want to understate the power of UE weapons - they are probably the best f2p weapons, but getting all copies of the SSR weapons is beyond the reach of unions that don't have at least several mid-ranked players, so if you are new, you are unlikely to get them to FLB. Just try to up your individual PP and collect as many holy soul points as possible and try to get 1 copy of lilim, lvl her to 40 to get the jewels, then orb her if you don't plan to use her.
