My advice to new players is to focus on growing, you can try to get a base event unit if you feel lucky but the main target is to CC an archer/Vampire hunter, unless you have a really good plat/black.
Reason why is at the lower levels, enemies generally have no armor and the increase range really helps clear the starting maps. (a pre-cc witch can handle armors till you are ready)
My recommended CC units: Bashira (you should have enough silver archers if not then your strongest silver archer then bash) -> Katie/Belinda -> mia/iris/valerie.
Your goal is to clear daily missions on hard and all of them need at least 1 CC archer(except monday which you can run with 2 CC witches+mage)
Do NOT buy spirits, its never worth the demon crystals.
Save your crystals for spica.
I would leave the event maps for the weekends and focus on daily maps during the weekdays. If you can get 1 copy of DK it is more than enough, the cost of her is so high, that CR doesn't really matter.
