If you think this is scummy, you may as well think all non-subscription MMOs are scummy, since I'm fairly certain most of them have similar policies.

Like, fine, if you think it's a shit policy, that's your call, but it's also nothing new and calling it shady is just silly.

Not all non-subscription MMO has same policy. There are popular free to play games that their premium currency never expires. Shadowverse crystals and Fire Emblem Heroes Orbs are good example.

    General > Crystal purchase:

    "Do crystals expire?
    No, crystals do not expire."

Source: Head to Shadowverse.com and click FAQ-Contact at the bottom of the page.

    Fire Emblem Heroes:

    Faq > Orbs

    "Do Orbs expire?
    No, they will not expire."

Source: Head to Fire-emblem-heroes.com/en/ and at the bottom of the page, click FAQ. Then click "Questions about Fire Emblem Heroes" at the bottom of the FAQ.

    I did say "most".

Though now that I'm trying to look back on them, they either changed their policies or outright died off. I vaguely remember kMMO localizers having this policy, anyway.

It's good to know that it is possible to change the policy or simply not to follow the bad policy. One famous example is Senran Kagura, because the producer sell his games without censorship to the west. This game is exceptionally faithful to the original Japanese release.. While many other heavy fan service games was censored or not localized. As a result, Senran Kagura has a huge fanbase in the west.
