Side quests are a set of scrolls that aren't anchored to a specific world, usually focusing on one or more characters in the game to provide an extra bit of story for the featured character(s). Much like most other things in the game, side quests come in different rarities which mostly determines how much energy is needed to complete the scroll and the rewards the scroll offers. Higher rarity scrolls will need more energy than lower rarity ones. Additionally, completing the scroll will grant you rewards in the form of experience and a number of ascension gems. The amount of experience granted will vary between scrolls and scales based on your player level.
