A bit of info from the Japanese wiki until this page gets properly designed.

Break Limit
Using multiples of the same idol, you can combine them under Break Limit to increase their max level. Break Limit also functions as a lesson and increases xp and skill xp. You do not need to level up the idol that will be consumed before using Break Limit. The level increases are +5, +5, +10 over three possible break limits.

Awakening
An idol with three break limits and at the maximum level (skill levels don't matter) can be awoken with items, which will increase the max level by +10 and possibly modify skills.

Regular Lesson
An idol can be set as a Base Idol then consume other idols to level up.
  • The level of the consumed idol doesn't matter, but higher rarity idols give more xp.
  • If the consumed idols have no skills, only level xp will increase.
  • Consuming idols with skills will slightly increase skill xp for the position of the skill (front skills get xp from consumed idols with front skills).
  • Consuming an idol that has the exact same skill as the base idol, will give a large boost. Note that the amount of +'s after a skill's name, do matter; if they don't match, you won't get a large xp boost.
  • The skill type, as in Dance or Sing, doesn't matter for xp.

Level up stats
Idols have a growth type: "Early" "Normal" and "Later". Early gains stats faster in the beginning, but has the lowest stat boost at max level. Later has the biggest stat boost at max level.

The differences between idol rarities are: base stats, cost range, and max level. Higher cost idols also have higher base stats. At max level, the stats scale the same regardless of rarity. A max level SSR will get the same percentage stat boost as a max level N or Rare, despite having wildly different max levels.

Percentage stat boost table. Unconfirmed if max level (no break limits) is the same for all rarities.

TypeMax levelBreak Limit MaxAwakened Max
Early3.613.84.275
Normal3.44.04.5
Later3.34.24.75

So, if an Early SR has 4000 ATK, then at level 90 it will have 15200 ATK. If it were a Later-type then it'd have 19000 ATK.

Early idols are worth leveling up if you don't think you'll get to break limit them easily. If you can easily awaken an idol, then Early is not particularly worth it unless they have great skills. Also note, Later Rares can have similar maximum stats to Early SRs, but it depends a bit on their cost (higher cost gives more base stats).
