doesn't have to stay open. it's pretty much the same as being in any other battle, you can close the game for hours and still come back to resume where you left off. you ONLY stop when you click to receive rewards aka end the current run. you can go back, but it resets and brings you back to floor 1.

To be specific, in Kamihime, you can leave a combat there for WEEKS, not just hours. I hear even if you close your client during old events that don't exist anymore, and the next time you load up you'll be able to resume the fight.

Except raids, because of their time limit.

So the only limitation when paused is that you can't do other fights?

yup, you can't start other fights, like start your own raids or SP quests, or watch episodes.
you can still join others raids though.

only four pages of rewards on latest version. and 2 tiers for the crawl, standard and ultimate.
