Umm, wow, I feel a little foolish now. I just checked the Japanese name of the event and, yeah, you're right. With these kanji (魔王) pronounced separately you get "ma" and "ou" (ou being a long "o" sound) so the proper transliteration is maou, which literally means "evil king/ruler" still though not the same with "demon king" which gives a different connotation.

To be fair though, the name Beelzebub (Lord of the Flies) does come from the Mesopotamian Ba'al which is a general term for a god or king. In fact some historians say that Beelzebub was named as such so as to insult and attack the Mesopotamian religion.

And forgive my ignorance but who is Fly?
