As for how people score highly, some people build more heavily for a good world boss team than others. I personally build more for beating top end PVE such as the soul ticket event boss, though I have plans to build for world bosses soonish. (I need to draw one more SSR Sanada Yukitaka and three more cursed shards for what I have planned, and then level up the general and the sword.)
One way to do it is to stack as many buffs as you can so that you have one character dealing as much damage to a single target as possible. That's the route I plan to go. It goes something like this:
Sanada Yukitaka (lots of damage buffs)
inherited Tiger of Kai (deals 350% damage)
Elite Crimson Rider class (+35% damage in first round)
five Koyo Gunkan buffs elsewhere on the team (+15% attack each)
Wind of Echigo buff (+20% damage)
Hatazirushi from the team leader (+10% attack)
level 65 Cursed Nameless Sword (+50% damage)
level 65 Cursed Nameless Armor (+20 power)
level 65 Zhan Guo Ce (+35% damage)
level 20 Perfect Emerald in port (+9.5% damage)
lots of high rank lab and temple skills (my current median skill level is 43)
I figure that should be good for about 1 million damage in the first round from that one general alone. In most world boss battles, that will be, do one hit for 1 million damage and instantly die of reflect damage. But I'll move her around some and in battles where I don't die on the first round, do a ton of additional damage on each subsequent round. Throw in several hundred thousand damage from other generals on the team, and I expect that would be good for about 1.5 million damage per battle if I can't line up well, and perhaps 2-4 million damage per battle against opponents 5, 6, 7, 9, and 11 on a map, at least until people kill the enemies that don't deal reflect damage.
