About this guide

This defensive guide will explain various build patterns you may use to build your Stronghold.
There is no right or wrong way to build your base, it all depends on what you want to achieve in terms of battle results or aesthetics.

Remember that you will not lose any resources or battle points/rank when you are defeated. Instead, the more you are attacked, the more chances you get for obtaining Sealed Stones and thus getting new Heroines. This does not depend on the battle result, you can receive a Sealed Stone even if you lose. Chance to get a Sealed stone is depending on the number of enemy units you defeat.

Extended resource building

Since this game is supported by battle economics, placing your resource buildings outside of your walls and away from reach of your defensive buildings will incentivise others to attack your base just to get resources.
This will benefit both attacker and defender, since the result is that you will get a chance to obtain a Sealed Stone.
Remember that you will not lose any resources in defensive battles even if you lose.

Additionally, you can also place your Castle outside of the reach of your defensive building which will serve as further incentive for attacker to choose to attack your Stronghold, but you will lose every defensive battle as a result.

Gaps of traps

You can intentionally leave a gap inside of your Stronghold for your enemy to deploy units. Usually you would have defenses close by to kill the enemy quickly, and traps to do the most effective damage.

Walled defenses

Instead of placing a wall around whole Stronghold, you place the walls only around your defensive buildings.
This can keep your defensive buildings standing for longer and lure the enemy to get closer to resource buildings. Since the resource buildings are placed on all sides of your defensive building, they also act as a second wall and Raider class units will be lured by them.

Clutter

You can pack all the buildings in close, with your defenses in the center. The buildings will be your second wall or as part of the wall if you did not constructed enough walls.
This kind of setup may be effective early game in lower rank, but is susceptible from Heroines special abilities and artillery fire.
However, units with preferences for special buildings such as Knights or Raiders can still walk between buildings even if there is no visible gap.

Defensive buildings range

Every defensive building has its effective range.
For efficient use and protection of your defenses, you can check building range when placing it. Defensive buildings that overlap each other with their range will provide additional cover fire against close range units unless they are closer enemy units nearby.

Howitzer in second line of defense

This involves putting howitzers behind Stronghold walls and another set of defensive buildings to make them difficult to reach, while they continue attacking enemy units.
While very effective, this may also discourage many players from attacking your Stronghold, resulting in lost Sealed Stones opportunities.

Artillery splash damage

Artillery is medium to long range attack unit with splash damage.
Its attack will target a single square and will cause splash damage within 2 squares to each side.

In this example, if an artillery unit were to attack one block of wall in center (same as with centered 3x3 building while not moving outer wall), it would cause splash damage everywhere inside the outer wall but outer wall itself would no longer take any damage.
Only exception to this are 4x4 structures such as Castle. In this case center spot is calculated in between blocks and as a result, damage will not be done to any nearby structures or units.

Spacing defensive buildings

To prevent artillery splash damage from destroying your defensive buildings faster, you can space your buildings according to their size.
Most defensive buildings have size 3x3 which means you need to leave 1 square gap empty in between them and 2 square gap empty from outer wall.
As additional defense, you can place walls in between them, but they will also be susceptible to artillery splash damage and may not be helpful as the result.

Keep in mind that spacing out your defensive buildings also means their effective range will cover less buildings. This may have the most impact near the outer wall where enemy range units may be able to destroy it without being in danger.

Single wall decoy

To protect yourself against artillery units in early game, you can build one wall and place it in center of your stronghold. This will cause all deployed artillery units to walk unprotected towards the wall and get destroyed by your defensive buildings around.

Artillery fire decoy

Artillery unit will always attack the nearest wall first, and only after it is destroyed, then will it attack the closest structure or unit.
As such, they are usually accompanied with other units such as Knights to cover them from defensive building fire.

In this example, artillery unit would attack the wall lining defensive buildings. If they were not accompanied by other units, they would take damage and could be destroyed.
While our defensive building will take damage from artillery splash attack, it is unlikely for them to get destroyed unless wall level is too high or defensive building level is too low comparatively.
After the wall is destroyed, artillery units will attack buildings closer to them first (structures outside of wall), ignoring your defensive buildings and giving them time to deal with other units first.

Wall mine field

Since artillery unit will attack closest wall first, putting single blocks wall in front of your main wall will act as decoy for them while also limiting enemy unit deploy range.
This will cause artillery to move closer to the defensive line since they no longer attack the wall next to them.
Any building behind them that are closer than your line of defense may also divert their attention for inexperienced attackers, but since they are most likely not in range of any defensive building, it will only cause distraction for a while unless attacker deployed other units as well.

While this may look effective and will discourage some opponents to attack, it is not effective with proper unit deployment timing.
This may also work against you if you have your building packed closer together due to additional splash damage behind the defensive line which will happen now from the start.
