It doesn't have to be reliable given that the opportunity cost is so low. Nutaku Aigis moves so slowly that gold shouldn't be an issue as long as you reserve base summoning for the times you're class evolving and put off aimless spending. That's what I did and I still ended up going on a couple of 400k gold summoning sprees for fun anyway. Runs of bad luck happen but spending 50k+ gold now and again isn't a big deal and if anything it's less tedious than spending hundreds of thousands all at once.
