While they may not be needed for awakening, they may still be better to exchange for Rainbow Crystals whenever that is brought over. If you are unaware, in DMM if you discharge a gold+rarity unit you get Rainbow Crystals (event units give negligible amounts) which can be exchanged in the trading post for strong units.

That said, it was a fairly recent development on DMM so it will likely be some time before it comes to Nutaku, and Gold units only grant 20 crystals while most of the units offered cost 1000.

Since you need cc Silvers for awakening, I assume you do cc30? Also, at what times would you use gold units for awakening, never?

Personally, I do so when I happen to have extra duplicate golds of the right class, and don't plan to use them for CR/skill up. Admittedly I could safe them for when Rainbow Crystals come, but generally I don't feel the need given how few they would give. Still, using golds vs CC'd silvers is just a situation of having them and personal preference for if you want to.
