I don't think your tastes in waifu are the problem.

I have zero evidence other than the ratio of bloomed-with-artwork to bloomed-without-artwork girls, but I strongly suspect the initial bloom girls were chosen more for the availability of artwork by the respective artists than popularity. There are still girls on DMM who've been around a long while who don't have bloomed artwork, such as Dianthus, Christmas Rose and Oncidium Bride. Viola (Yukata) got bloomed artwork well before the older Viola as another example.
