Also, ?-3 in particular (which appears to have a better pumpkin/stamina ratio than ?-4) is glitched according to some, so that doesn't seem to help with the pumpkin gathering.

It seems to be connected to how many pumpkins you get from the map. you get an error if you go beyond 250 pumpkins at ?-3

I've been farming that map since day one and I didnt encounter any errors yet. I do usually just get 232 pumpkins tho with a standard team/speed setup.
