And being a new player, I just have to ask, how common is it for this the devs to screw over this game? I've heard there's a lot of FG given as compensation in the past for mishaps...

Well the best FG compensation was 20 but I think the total gems they gave out that im aware of is 45 (#blamecall 5FG, long maintenance 10FG x2 and bride event fiasco 20FG. I may have missed a few I think.). But the best compensation they gave in my opinion was the 5* ticket from the stamina bug.
