Will it automatically tell me if someone encounters a SEG? Or do I need to do something to refresh the page? Most of these SEGs don't take very long to get wiped out. I feel like if you don't refresh and catch it, it'll get swallowed up by a whale (not that I'm complaining).

I have my answer. You need to refresh it. I refreshed the page and a friend was in the middle of a battle with a SEG. Good to know.

Yes. I usually switch between "in battle" and "battle results" tabs.

I just roll the search once in a while and it updates (just like with Sta and Focus) Or switch between Search, Event screen and Main Menu/Daily Missions
