This is mostly the case if you play on the censored version of DMM, for god knows whatever reason. On the uncensored version (www.dmm.co.jp) you most likely do not need any VPN's.

Basically the Nutaku version got only one thing over DMM and that is language.
I switched from Nutaku after 7 months of playing to DMM.
