As far as i know there is no way to turn off the requests. Also, they're not automatic, it's just that most people don't notice. If you have a free slot and someone that sends a gift too, there will be a checkbox at the return gift/accept gift that says "send friend request". Obviously new players would either not notice this and friend requests get sent all over the place.
